Rashid Lanie

Producer and internationally acclaimed composer, pianist, arranger, and recording artist has won the 2018 Rapid Lion Award for Best Soundtrack for the movie Kalushi - The Solomon Mahlangu Story As well as the Golden Horn for BEST SCORE for the same movie. 


He has also worked with international stars such as Chaka Khan, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, Will.I.AM, Ray Parker Jr., and many others. During the Apartheid era, he wrote the song "The People Want Mandela”, In celebration of Nelson Mandela's release from prison, then left his native South Africa in 1994 with scholarships to University of Southern California and Musicians' Institute in Hollywood. 1995 he musically directed the performance of the Lion King album Rhythm of the Pridelands, featuring LEBO M, Hans Zimmer, and musicians from Stevie Wonder and Madonna's bands. In 1999 he performed for the Dalai Lama's Sacred Music Festival in Los Angeles. 


Amongst other Awards Rashid has received 'Best Arrangement' from the American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers for Infant Eyes, is a nominated 'Best World Music Artist' for LA Music Awards. His song Ehlatini (The African Bush) came 2nd in the ISC (International Songwriting Competition) in the jazz category. He performed in the World Cup 2010 Kick-Off Celebration Concert in SA alongside John Legend, Shakira, Alicia Keyes and Black-eyed Peas; and in 2015 for UNESCO's Mandela Day. Rashid has spoken at the United Nations on behalf of SA musicians, served as Vice-President of the SA Musicians' 
Alliance. The Rashid Lanie Jazz Trio, performs regularly in and around SA and he oscillates between Los Angeles and South Africa. 


Rashid produced a meditation cd project based on the songs written by internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter Rickie Byars. On the heels of completing a score for Netflix last year 2023 called, “The Silverton Siege" Rashid is now following up with a new Netflix movie score – "The Heart Of The Hunter" for 29 March 2024 release, as well as "Cop and a Half” which is currently in production. Additionally, an animation series called the Nelson Mandel's African Folk Stories is also set for release in 2024 set to his music.
